Backlinks
Large parts of the SEO industry still focus on link building or getting links to improve search engine visibility especially on Google. There is nothing wrong with that. Of course there are limits. There are now so many pitfalls to link building that you have to be very exact when it comes to following the Google Webmaster Guidelines.

5000 links for $19 – dubious offers from spam emails offering you 5000 links for $19 are too good to be true. They lead almost directly to a penalty.
Paid links on high PR sites – while you can get away with paid links in many cases, it’s quite easy to get noticed when you buy links on so-called high PR sites where the toolbar PageRank is 6 and above. There are only a handful of sites that have PR9 and even the number of PageRank 8 sites is easy to monitor. PageRank sites ...

Duplicate content

Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar. Mostly, this is not deceptive in origin. Examples of non-malicious duplicate content could include:

Discussion forums that can generate both regular and stripped-down pages targeted at mobile devices
Store items shown or linked via multiple distinct URLs
Printer-only versions of web pages

If your site contains multiple pages with largely identical content, there are a number of ways you can indicate your preferred URL to Google. (This is called “canonicalization”.) More information about canonicalization.
However, in some cases, content is deliberately duplicated across domains in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings or win more traffic. Deceptive practices like this can result in a poor user experience, when a visitor sees substantially the same content repeated within a set of search results.
Google tries hard to index and show pages with ...

What does this tool do? This tool analyzes a web page, searching for characteristics that search engines could consider spam. If you don’t know what “search engine spamming” means or if you want to know how this tool works, you can read the Spam detector FAQ.
What type of tricks does it find? The tool tries to detect three main methods: keyword stuffing, doorway farms and hidden text. Any trick based on Javascript or on CSS positioning/layering will not be detected (for now). Search engine spam detection is very difficult to accomplish and this tool can’t recognize all the existing tricks/methods; it isn’t perfect and it sometimes fails.
Why did you create this tool? To persuade webmasters and SEO to think: if I have been able to create a simple tool capable of intercepting some techniques of spam, imagine what ...

Google is believed to apply a variety of filters to sites that fail to follow their TOS. More often than not, if you correct all errors, you will be forgiven and filters will be removed (even with no reconsideration request required).
The major problem is, webmasters might be completely unaware of the fact the site is filtered or under penalty. They might be unaware of (internal) duplicate content problem, notorious bad neighborhood problems or “over-optimization” issues. The possible issues might be numerous and they can be totally invisible even to an SEO-savvy person.
So here are a few flags that might mean your site is forced to have lower rankings than it deserves due to the penalty or filter:
1. Sudden Google referral traffic drop (or sudden loss of major rankings). As discussed earlier this change may be applied to the whole site (which might mean the problem is in the external backlinks) ...

Hi Guys,
I am really confused, I have gone through the Google Guidelines and I cant find anything wrong with my site. I have submitted reconsideration requests but I still have a Google penalty. I admit, my site was borderline with keywords, but I have removed lots of keywords that may look like keyword stuffing. I also had an old account with LinkMarket, but this has since been canceled.
I have a shopping site www.icoste.com and received a penalty around 2 months ago. Now I understand that my site is an affiliate site, however I also offer product ratings, merchant ratings, reviews and comparisons so I wouldn’t say that it was a thin affiliate site.
I don’t know what is wrong and I have asked Google 5 times what is wrong, so that I can fix it, or even just take the site down if I am going to have a permanent penalty, ...

There is not a week that goes by that I do not come across someone posting on a forum stating that they have been penalized or even banned by Google, Yahoo or another search engine. Most claims do not have much merit. The individual just assumes they have been penalized because their site is not ranking well for search terms they think it should or they don’t know how to check if their site is indexed in a search engine. Even seeing a grayed out PageRank meter in the Google toolbar can lead people to assume the unthinkable – “I’ve been banned!” However there are times when a web site has indeed come under some kind of penalty or has been completely removed from a search index for one reason or another. In this article we will look at ways to avoid such penalties as well as ways to redeem ...

Yesterday, through a large increase in visitor numbers to my website, I discovered that my Google penalty has been lifted. In this article, I’m going to tell you why I was penalised by Google, what I did to have the penalty removed, and how you can avoid a similar penalty for your website / blog.
Last month, I asked for advice regarding a huge drop in my Googlesearch rankings. For around six months prior to the drop, I ranked at #1 when searching for my name, David Airey. The penalty imposed on my website dropped this position from #1 to around #70 and I also lost rankings for a host of graphic design-related terms, making me a lot less findable.

What you thought had happened to my website
There was A LOT of differing opinion on this, found via:

Bob Sakayama, SEO, has successfully unwound the Google penalty for his clients. Clean your site of unsanctioned seo strategies, and build legitimate structural strength for your site’s search goals. Then get back in there and reclaim your ranks.
What Exactly Triggers A Google Penalty?
If you’re trying to avoid a Google penalty, read this is from Google’s site guidelines:

Avoid hidden text or hidden links.
Don’t employ cloaking or sneaky redirects.
Don’t send automated queries to Google.
Don’t load pages with irrelevant words.
Don’t create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content.
Avoid “doorway” pages created just for search engines, or other “cookie cutter” approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content.

There are other ways to achieve a Google penalty, like buying and inter-linking too many domains, listing your keywords repeatedly, linking to a bad neighborhood, accidentally exposing (through links) parts of your site that should not be live, etc.
In general, anything hidden from the human visitor but visible ...
